The vertigo of creation.
Creation is an act of destruction.Birthing the new into a world that demands predictability is to introduce tension into it. More precisely, it is one’s Self-world relationship that is made tense by creation. Suddenly, the balance point has shifted, the goal posts have moved. And it is felt as though the grip we once had on our world no longer seems to hold.
Creations attack the illusions of life.
A new belief, a new theory, a new identity that begins to emerge hacks at the pillars of one’s sense of reality, that “Self-world” relationship, or how we see and fit in the world. But our world is not “reality”. It is subjective. Our life is an illusion, among others, where we do not see reality as it is. We are limited by beliefs, and by biology. Those are the dimensions, the lines, and the goal posts of our worldview.
Creation introduces tension between our illusion and a reality that becomes more and more clear. When a pillar of belief begins to crack beneath us, we feel an off-balanced motion in our bellies, a vertigo. We realise that there is another way to see the world.
That we’ve be fooled.
And the vertigo begins to feel like a betrayal.
And in that moment when we fail to let go of our illusions, that we continue to grip on to the falling knife of those illusions, a trepidous chaos follows. Where has the predictability suddenly gone now that creation has rupture our perception? Predictability was never there to be begin with. It was a belief living disconnected from reality in the mind to coddle it. Illusion is useful in this way; in that it allows us to move forward when there is no inherent structure to begin with... in a way, we do create our own world, but do we do it consciously? That’s another matter.
As the pillars beneath us begin to crack, an angst will spawn. The moment of collapse is just around the corner. We sense it. It’s in slow motion now as we approach it. It’s the oxygen running out of our lungs when we need it most.
Breath, breath…
So we’ll agree; this situation ought to be avoided. Creation is too much of a rupture. Coming upon a new belief is too shattering to the identity we’ve attached to in order to face the world.
But deep down, we have an instinct for catastrophe, for death. It lives in us, and it reminds us that we are not fully in control. It pushes us to go on, sure, despite all that, as we attempt to balance ourselves on this tight rope we call life. But it’s still better that we avoid falling altogether. And we do. We do it by avoiding any and all change we are not forced to make for the reason that this vertigo is the limit of our being. And that it humiliates us as it reminds us that we are balancing out an equation that we’ve made up all along.
It’s our rational sense, so heavily emphasised in modernity, that fails to teach us well. It fails to teach us that there is something more powerful, more freeing that lurks within us. The irrational. But we cannot trust that. So we remain strangers to this side of our being as we feel it still in our shadows, nonetheless. It’s irrational mumbo jumbo, for now. But it’s potent… it’s a power that sleeps in us; it’s the power of a thousand men. That is the source of Man’s (*as in men & women) life force.
So creation is the life force of our suppressed will– its provenance is the unconscious. And it is the meeting between our unconscious and our conscious awareness that births creation. And this meeting is a war. A war to change the frontiers of our Self-world relationship. It ruptures the old Self-world relationship, it dispels the illusions, and it reveals the mystery of the hidden Self.
And to enable this life force, that we’ve hidden away, means to succumb to the humiliation of having ignored it once it is revealed into the light– it is an exercise in Self-immolation… And who would dare be such a fool?
Why avoid the powers that reside in us?
To begin with, we are reticent to unleash the powers within. Instead, we project them onto our hero figures. We’ve organised society to keep it that way for centuries, to allow us to remain unconscious–but we know deep down that we have it in us to do incredible deeds.
Good deeds.
But the collective unconscious defects from this. And you belong to this collective. So you too defect from your own power– unless you latch on to courage.
Unfortunately, we’ve long been trained against knowing about our own powers. It’s Alan Watts’s “Taboo against knowing yourself”. We must behave. Conform. Submit. Submit to a collective sense of dignity by being “normal”, by not standing out. The child must not speak so nor should you as adult, call that the remnants of your childhood.
And there are perfectly valid reasons to say that something like “It’s not all about you!”. In fact it’s not all about you, but that’s different from submissively conforming. What I’m talking about is you falling in love with your captor. Coerced into bondage that does not expect much from you. But suddenly, you’ve become your own captor now, and your mind has become a prison from where you act out an existence does not belong to you.
There’s a way out.
It’s irrational, this way out. So you won’t consider it. Whatever seeks expression from your irrational is deemed morally inferior. That’s wrong. It’s trickery. It’s considered wrong because “to create” implies “to destroy”. To create anything would break you free of all the restlessness that others feel as shackles in the form of their stagnant identities. So they tell you not to in subtle ways. In their retreats, in the way they give or retract they validation, they use love against you to preserve their self-world relationship.
They do not love you.
“If I create…”, one might say, “If I release the floodgates of by depths out into awareness…” then I shall be seen. Me. That eternal self among other sleeping giants. And now what? Now, I am shy to look at it. It looks as a small child, an embryo. And the light is too bright upon it. But yet… the purity of a creation’s form, that is exactly what gives it value. They will see! They will see when they find themselves reflected in the mirror of your creation… Exposed. Exposed for their cowardice when you have dared breach the limits they still believe exist.
They only exist because we believe they do when we give them value.
But holding moral high grounds in your beliefs will prevent you from making breakthroughs, from allowing your powers to unleash. And you will be stuck. Saying that your creations are just too small, or too fragile to maintain your stable state in this world. So you must protect it by hiding it, otherwise the world will break it, or your world will shatter instead.
But to lose it all in exchange for the world is the very gift of giving.
Rupture from lies is the gift you get from giving to the world honesty, in a single release, in a single painful revelation into the light of who you are.
Assuming it is a truthful creation, then its purity will shine through. It will be enough to shield itself from the depraved, from those whose eternal self is a vagrant, because what lurks in the shadows is always exposed by the light in the end. And your creation will have that faculty, of light. And because of this it will humiliate the enslaved’s sense of grief, when they remember that they too still have the chance, now, to show the world their own flame.
And so you will stand, alone, as a hero does in the end, pilloried… crucified… dead.
But all Men die.
So why not die gloriously?
As heroes do to reach immortality.
But it is via courage– this noblest of virtues– that Man confronts the tension that arises within from creation, newly armed with the readiness to die for the Good, for the truth. With this mind, the hero releases the enslaved, the morose, and the weak from their own limits by the example of his triumph over himself.
Courage–the highest of virtues.
Courage is the key. The key to deliverance.
From what?
From too small a life.
That is what freedom means,. and that is why we seldom chose it. We are easily coerced back into obeying our captors whenever we attempt a revolt because real freedom is complete solitude. Solitude from the comfort of passivity. But solitude is the gift. You just do not know what to do with it. What would you really do if you were not afraid of freedom’s horrifying solitude? If you were not afraid of entering into the unknown? If you knew the language of the mystery that is the unconscious? Would you not also let yourself go?
Abandon ship!
Your tyrants do not love you.
And courage is all you have now, to have the heart to go all the way in spite of the punishments, the fears, the vertigo. In spite of death itself when it stares you down.
Courage is all you’ll ever truly possess in live anyway.
Because you’ll be alone if you do go all the way in this pursuit of becoming.
And courage will be a selfish endeavour in that you cannot give it to others like an object. You must cultivate it in yourself first, by becoming yourself– that is how you will give the world the seed of your courage, in turn. Through example.
And to be seen authentically naked in your being, in all the rawness of your proposal to the world, will require a courage, one that anticipates the war from the violent backlash of the collective’s cowardice–all their hate, antagonism, their revealed anxiety, their suffocated souls, and the screaming child within them–all those things are not about you, they are about them.
Enter the “It’s not all about you.” statement in its rightful place.
So conquer this misconception. And you’ll win the war.
It ends up being a spiritual matter. And of having a strong enough body to carry it all forward. Because if you harness the courage in creating your being, you will need to prepare yourself to see the worse in Man, Man at war against the purity of their own un-birthed creations.
“We are not well acquainted courage, and I:
We’ve spent too many years apart.
Living out separate lives.
Ignoring one another, pretending to be strange figures in the distance.
But when creation comes along, as it must in life, then we must prepare for destruction.
For the mounting of tension, as others see our growth and punish us for leaving them behind.
So it might be tempting to remain unconscious just like they have.
It would be more comfortable to finish this life in a death accompanied only by an un-birthed fetus, petrified in our womb.
To die in a state of cowardice.
To preach from our death beds saying to the living;
It’s not too late !
Not for you !
To live out your life.
Unlike me…
So do not see the destruction in creation as evil. It is cowardice to avoid the summons to create, that’s an evil sort of trickery. And you will miss the big picture if you fear the destructive aspect of creation. And in the end, nothing will come of you since nothing will have changed in you. Isn’t that death? To have never been? The evil trick played on the mind to avoid courage and to embrace the cowardice of pleasure and comfort instead will have been the greatest joke the devil has ever made.
But I too would want to punish those who live as creations spawn–destructively. If I was sick from the cowardice that hid away my gifts in vaults long locked; I’d also deplor those who dared.
And I implore you not to be that Man.
That man who has thrown away the keys.
Do not be scarce in your will to give to others what courage will give you.
Never be the Man who fears a death that might rise out of courageous acts.
Instead, be that Man whose courage victoriously crushes the darkness with its light.
For the Good.
For the birth of the gift.
